Happy 199th birthday, Susan B. Anthony! In my youth, I knew her best as the figure on the much-maligned $1 coin. (For those of you who don’t remember, this was an attempt in the United States to make a $1 coin that, like the loonie in Canada, was much more compact than a silver dollar. Unfortunately, it was too close in size and appearance to the quarter, causing lots of confusion.) Susan B. Anthony was a famous advocate for women’s rights, including the right to vote, and for the abolition of slavery. She was also a strong advocate for temperance, for what it’s worth. I’m sure some hipster bar with a deep sense of irony must be offering $1 Susan B. Anthony shots today.
